Smothered Cubed Steak

My grandma’s recipe with a few added tweaks, one of my favorite comforting meals!

    • 1 pack of cubed steak

    • 1 onion

    • 1 whole carton Beef broth

    • Beef better than bouillon (optional)

    • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream

    • 2 tablespoons Gravy Master

    • Flour

In a skillet add vegetable oil enough to sear meat. Season your meat with your seasonings of choice, I also add worcestershire  Sauce. Once seasoned, coat meat in flour (you can season your flour, its optional I don’t want mine too salty) then sear in medium/hot oil on both sides until browned, set aside in casserole dish.

Set aside browned oil in a separate bowl.

Add your onions with 1 tablespoon of butter to the same pan and sear onions on medium/low heat for a few minutes. Add some of the browned oil from meat drippings. (Optional: Add 1 tablespoon of beef better than bouillon), make sure the heat is still on a medium/low temperature or let it cool down some then add a few tablespoons of the leftover flour until mixture becomes a nice smooth consistency. (Adding flour to a hot pan can curdle or clump up.) Pour beef broth into mixture continuously stirring to form your gravy. I used almost 1 whole box of beef broth. Add 1/4 cup of heavy cream or you can do 1/2 cup depending on how creamy you like, couple dashes of gravy master , and season to your liking.

Pour mixture over meat, cover in foil and cook on 350 for 1 hour 30 minutes. Take out the oven and recoat meat with gravy. Cook for another 1 hour and 30 minutes until meat is tender, fall apart with a fork. Sometimes you can cook a little longer or a little less depending on thickness of meat.

Keep covered in foil to slow cook the meat, continue to check it every so often to make sure it’s to your liking as you may not need the full 3 hours.

Enjoy!
